Demonstrated Load

If the calculated load is too high for your electrical service, there is the alternative of using your historical demand (demonstrated load) based on CEC 8-106(8). This differs a bit by province, but generally provinces like Ontario and BC allow you to get the historical hourly usage for the past 12 months from the utility, and use that along with the instructions to determine the available capacity for additional loads like an EVSE.

Note: Just because a service has a 100 A or 200 A breaker, it doesn't necessarily mean that's its capacity. The service wires may have less capacity. For example, a 100 A service using No. 2 AWG Al conductors is limited to 90 A maximum load (Ontario/ESA - other provinces may differ).

8) Where additional loads are to be added to an existing service or feeder, the augmented load shall be permitted to be calculated by adding the sum of the additional loads, with demand factors as permitted by this Code, to the maximum demand load of the existing installation as measured over the most recent 12-month period, but the new calculated load shall be subject to Rule 8-104 5) and 6).
